Chelsea in talks to sign £51m player from premier league rival

Chelsea are reportedly in talks to sign a midfielder from one of their Premier League rivals.

They have started negotiations with Everton over a potential deal for Amadou Onana, according to Voetbalkrant.

He will not come cheap, though, with the same outlet claiming that the Toffees will not sell the 22-year-old for anything less than €60m (£51m).

Chelsea already have good midfield options, which includes the likes of Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo.

However, Romeo Lavia has not been able to stay fit this season, while Conor Gallagher could leave the club in the summer. His contract is running down and Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly ready to make a move for him if he does not sign a new one.

If Lavia can overcome his injury problems and Gallagher remains at Stamford Bridge, then there really is not a reason for Chelsea to sign Onana.

As of now, though, there is a chance of the latter leaving west London, so it is only normal for the club to start looking at other options.

Entering negotiations to sign Onana at this point seems a bit premature, but whatever the case, the Belgium international is a good midfielder.

This season, he is making 2.5 tackles per game in the Premier League, which is the fourth-highest average in Everton’s squad (WhoScored). It is similar to Gallagher’s average, which is currently 2.4.

In an ideal world, Chelsea just keep hold of Gallagher, who can win the ball back but has also proven in the Blues’ last couple of games that he is capable of scoring goals as well.

The England international netted three times across Chelsea’s two victories against Crystal Palace in the Premier League and Aston Villa in the FA Cup.

However, Mauricio Pochettino may have to start preparing for life after him soon, with Onana being a potential successor perhaps
