Chelsea beat Manchester United, Bayern Munich, Real Madrid in the race to sign Kai Havertz

Chelsea hold Kai Havertz transfer talks in bid to beat Man Utd to £70m deal. Chelsea are aiming to beat Manchester United, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid to Kai Havertz.

Chelsea have held talks with Bayer Leverkusen over a deal for Kai Havertz. The Blues are looking to further strengthen Frank Lampard’s attacking options after agreeing terms with Timo Werner and sealing a deal for Hakim Ziyech.

According to, Chelsea plan to splash the cash in the upcoming transfer window after a year of limited incomings. A ban on new arrivals meant converting Mateo Kovacic’s loan into a permanent deal was the club’s only activity last summer while they failed to make any signings in January.

Stamford Bridge bosses believe they have lost ground on Premier League champions-elect Liverpool and current title-holders Manchester City.

Despite a mixed campaign, Chelsea are fourth in the table, with a three-point advantage over Manchester United in the race for Champions League qualification.

Chelsea face competition from the Red Devils, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid for Havertz, who has scored five goals in four games since the Bundesliga restarted last month.

The Blues are ready to splash the cash despite the financial ramifications of the coronavirus crisis. They could have a clear path to Havertz if their rivals adopt a cautious approach ahead of the window.

A deal could prove difficult to strike, however.

Bayer Leverkusen are holding out for €100million (£89m) but Chelsea hope to negotiate the fee down to £70m, according to the Guardian.

Chelsea appear to have set their sights on Havertz because they are fighting a losing battle for Jadon Sancho.

Borussia Dortmund are demanding a higher fee for Sancho while United are leading that particular race.

But former Premier League midfielder Don Hutchison believes Havertz is the better bet.

“[In Sancho] I see a young player that’s got so much ability and when you are young you make mistakes on and off the pitch, which we’ve seen Jadon Sancho make this week,” Hutchison told ESPN FC.

“I think he’s got it. I think right here, right now if you’re asking me the question ‘Who would you rather have?’ or ‘Which player would you see going for over £100m?’ between Jadon Sancho and Kai Havertz, in my opinion I would be leaning towards Kai Havertz.

“I think he looks as though, at the moment, he looks a better prospect, he looks a better player because he looks as though he’s thinking about the game more.

“But at the same time Jadon Sancho’s got this electric pace about him, these super-quick feet.

“If you get a manager who plays him and gives him loads of confidence and pits him with better players, the future I think could be incredible for him.

“But I think at the moment, I think Havertz is slightly ahead.”
