Mikel Arteta Sack? Conte reactions on Arsenal job

Arsenal have no immediate plans to sack Mikel Arteta, despite the club making its worst ever start to a Premier League season.

After losing back-to-back games against Brentford and Chelsea, without scoring a goal, the Gunners head into tonight’s Carabao Cup fixture against West Brom with a feeling of trepidation.

Premier League champions and Arteta’s former club, Manchester City, lie in wait this weekend as Arsenal face the distinct possibility of heading into the international break with no points.

According to the Independent, despite the grim outlook, Arteta remains in no immediate danger although there is, for the first time, an acceptance that a continuous slide into mediocrity cannot go on indefinitely.

Reports earlier this week claimed that Arsenal would sound out former Chelsea and Inter head coach Antonio Conte were they forced to sack Arteta.

The Italian masterminded Inter’s first Serie A title success in a decade last season but parted company with the Nerazzurri in the summer, amid their financial crisis which forced them to sell the likes of Romelu Lukaku and Achraf Hakimi.

Conte, however, is said to have little interest in returning to the Premier League with Arsenal given the current state of disrepair the first team squad is in at present, despite this summer’s transfer spend which currently stands at £130m.

Arsenal have invested heavily in players for the future with the likes of Aaron Ramsdale, Albert Sambi Lokonga, Nuno Taveres and Ben White adding a much needed injection of youth.

Conte, however, is a notorious serial winner who will has little intention of overseeing a long-term project, particularly one where he is unlikely to have total control over transfer policy.
