Peseiro, who was recommended by former Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho, is expected to be appointed ahead of compatriot, Jose Morais, officials disclosed.

He was until recently coach Venezuela, but experts have questioned his achievements and suitability to replace sacked Gernot Rohr.

However, he will only be an “observer” at the AFCON in Cameroon with his first assignment being the 2022 FIFA World Cup final playoffs in March.

Caretaker coach Austin Eguavoen will lead the Eagles to the AFCON with his retinue of assistants.

Nigeria will be one of ten teams to be drawn next month during the AFCON in a final playoff to be played on home and away basis between March 21 and 29, 2022, to determine the five teams to represent Africa at the World Cup in Qatar in November.
