Transfer News: Man United set to release five players, Chelsea offer Pulisic, Ziyech for Rafael Leao

Welcome to the latest transfer update ahead of summer transfer window as some clubs already scouting players of their interest.

Man Utd set to release five players

According to Manchester United evening news, Phil Jones and Axel Tuanzebe are expected to be among the Manchester United players released in the summer. Jones, 31, has started two games in three years due to a knee problem while fellow centre-back Tuanzebe, 25, has not played for United since the Europa League final in 2021.

Northern Ireland midfielder Ethan Galbraith, currently on loan at League Two side Salford, has been informed he will be let go at the end of his contract. Academy goalkeeper Ondrej Mastny and Charlie Wellens are also likely to be let go after short loans with Portadown and Oldham Athletic. Spanish striker Mateo Mejia’s future is also uncertain.

Chelsea offer Pulisic & Ziyech for Leao

Chelsea had reportedly offered Christian Pulisic and Haim Ziyech in a swap deal to sign Rafael Leao from AC Milan last summer according to The Athletic. The Blues reportedly valued the player at around €100m at that time and tried to negotiate with the Italian giants but a deal did not materialise. They once again pursued the player late into the transfer window but at that Milan pointed out a €150million buyout clause in the player’s contract at that time.

Brentford progressing in Flekken talks

Brentford are progressing with a deal to sign Freiburg goalkeeper Mark Flekken. The player has indicated he is willing to join the Bees this summer and the club are prepared to trigger a release clause in his contract worth just over £11m. The deal is not done yet however, and talks will continue in the coming days. But Brentford are drawing up a contract for him that is likely to last either four or five years in length.

Last week, Sky Sports News revealed Brentford have three leading goalkeeper targets this summer in Flekken, Nantes’ Alban Lafont and Liverpool’s Caoimhin Kelleher.

Sky Germany are reporting this evening that there is an expectation in Germany that Flekken will join Brentford. Freiburg sporting director Jochen Saier has said: “It may be that Mark leaves us.

Wrexham to hold talks with Foster

Wrexham are to hold talks with Ben Foster over whether the former England goalkeeper wants to prolong his career with them in the English Football League.

Foster was retired for nine months until he answered a Wrexham SOS in March after regular goalkeeper Rob Lainton was ruled out for the rest of the campaign through injury. The 40-year-old played the final eight games of the season, saving a stoppage-time penalty in the crunch 3-2 victory over title rivals Notts County, as Wrexham won the National League with a record points total of 111.

“A discussion will take place with Ben Foster to establish if his intention is to return to retirement or continue playing,” Wrexham said in a statement announcing their end-of-season release/retained list.
