Mike Maignan is being linked with a move to Chelsea pretty consistently at the moment, although recent days have seen his cross town rival Andre Onana take the drivers seat.
That’s not because the Blues think Onana is better – if anything their preference seems to be for Maignan.
The problem is the transfer fee, with the Cameroon stopper seemingly available significantly cheaper than Maignan. TuttoMercatoWeb claim that AC Milan will only accept an offer of €80m for him, with rumours around Onana naming prices closer to €60m.
That’s a big difference, but we’ve learned the lesson of times over the years that trying to save money in the short term can ultimately lead to more money spent in the long run. Buy cheap, buy twice, as they say.
Time is of the essence if we want Maignan however. The same piece claims he is negotiating a new contract with Milan to run until 2028, and if Chelsea don’t force the issue, he will probably sign it.
