Chelsea suffered another injury blow in the Carabao cup game against AFC Wimbledon

Chelsea have been handed a major injury scare as young defender Levi Colwill limped out of action on Wednesday night amid fears of an ankle injury.

Colwill started the Carabao Cup second-round clash with Wimbledon, in which Chelsea survived a major scare after falling behind, only for Enzo Fernandez to score a late winner to see them into the third round of the competition.

However, they could have yet another injury worry.

First-team stars Reece James, Benoit Badiashile, Trevoh Chalobah (all hamstring), Wesley Fofana, Christopher Nkunku, Carney Chukwuemeka, Armando Broja (all knee) and third choice goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli are all already sidelined through injury, with Fofana expected to miss much of the season and Nkunku, Chukwuemeka and James all set for at least a month without action.

Meanwhile, Mykhaylo Mudryk is also out for a few days after missing the win over Luton Town with a hamstring issue.

Now, a tenth player could be watching on from the sidelines after Colwill limped off with an ankle injury in the second half of the win at Stamford Bridge, and he was afterwards pictured walking across the pitch after the game with an ice pack on his ankle by fans watching on in west London.

Any injury could have implications for Gareth Southgate, who is set to name his England squad on Thursday afternoon. Colwill was expected to be under serious consideration for a spot in the side, but fitness issues could put pay to that and postpone his senior debut.

It would also leave Chelsea scrambling ahead of the weekend’s clash with Nottingham Forest, with Badiashile and Colwill the only left-sided centre-backs on their books as things stand and the pair both potentially sidelined.
