£52m Chelsea star will be available to play against Middlesbrough

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino could be about to receive a huge injury boost ahead of his side’s Carabao Cup semi-final tie against Middlesbrough on Tuesday.

Mauricio Pochettino confirmed yesterday that Christopher Nkunku missed Chelsea‘s 4-0 win versus Preston North End in the third round of the FA Cup because of a hip problem.

However, according to journalist Santi Aouna, he was only rested because of that hip issue and will be available for the Blues’ next game.

“He will be in the squad,” Aouna claimed on X.

It will come as a relief to Chelsea fans, who have only just watched the forward return from a knee injury.

Mauricio Pochettino needs Christopher Nkunku to remain fit

One player who Pochettino will not want to get injured right now is Nkunku.

Again, the Argentine has just got him back, while he is also without Nicolas Jackson after the 22-year-old’s departure to the Africa Cup of Nations.

Jackson has been Chelsea’s first-choice striker in the Premier League this season, scoring seven goals in 19 appearances.

Nkunku is an elite forward, so he can come into the team and easily take over from Jackson, even if the France international is not a natural No.9.

In his penultimate season at RB Leipzig before his £52m move to Chelsea (BBC Sport), Nkunku scored 35 goals in all competitions. Wherever he plays in the forward line for the Blues, he is likely to find the back of the net.

It is why Pochettino needs to keep him fit, but that has obviously been easier said than done this term.

At least, however, this hip issue does not sound too bad. Hopefully Nkunku can play the first leg of Chelsea’s semi-final tie against Middlesbrough in the Carabao Cup and take the club one step closer to Wembley and silverware.
