Chelsea enter race to sign versatile 20-year-old defender

Chelsea football club linked with Sporting CP defender as they are favorite to sign the star player this January transfer window.

The West London club made a lot of signings during the summer transfer window last year as they completed the signings of several players including Moises Caicedo, Axel Disasi, Lesley Ugochukwu, Romeo Lavia and Nicolas Jackson.

However, Chelsea football club have endured a rather disappointing start to the 2023/2024 football season and are currently occupying the 10th position on the Premier League table.

Coupled with that, Chelsea football club lost their most recent match 1-0 against Middlesbrough in the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-finals on Tuesday evening.

As a result of this defeat, Chelsea football club want to improve their defensive options and have been linked with a move for highly-rated Sporting CP central defender Ousmane Diomande.

The 20-year-old Ivory Coast International, who signed up for Sporting CP after departing Denmark side Midtjylland back in 2023 has been an important member of the first-team squad so far.

The young centre-back has been readily available for Sporting CP so far this ongoing 2023/2024 season, scoring two goals and recording one assist to help his side to first position on the Portuguese league table.

His excellent performances in defence is believed to have caught the attention of Chelsea football club and according to reports from Transfer News Live, the Blues are keen on signing him.

The reports further claimed that Chelsea football club are really interested in the young Ousmane Diomande and are making moves to sign the young defender from Sporting CP.

It is believed that Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino wants to add more quality to his options in defence and he has identified the young Ousmane Diomande as a needed addition to his squad.

But with Real Madrid and Arsenal football club also interested in Ousmane Diomande, it remains to be seen where the young centre-back will choose to continue his developments if he gets to leave Sporting CP before the transfer window closes.
