Going into the semifinals of the match with South Africa, the Super Eagles knew this one was going to be tough, especially after the outcome of the quarterfinal match in which the South Africa keeper saved four penalties. Despite chances at both ends of the pitch, the first-half ended in a goalless draw.
The match finally came alive after Super Eagles broke the scores through a penalty from Ekong but in the final stages of the match, South Africa leveled the scores through a penalty also to send the match into extra time with a 1-1 full-time score.
No sides could find the back of the net in extratime with the match heading to penalties. Nigeria goalkeeper, Stanley Nwabali saved two penalties to send the Super Eagles into the final of the AFCON.
As announced by CAF, Stanley Nwabali was given the man of the match award following his heroic saves in the penalty shootout to send Nigeria to the finals.
