Microsoft has officially announced the price of its second next-generation console, the Xbox Series S, which is rumoured to be launching alongside the Series X.
Xbox was forced to make the announcement after the release date and prices for both consoles were leaked online earlier than intended.
This second Xbox console is a cheaper version of the Series X and it is technically a less powerful version which has no disc tray.
Microsoft has officially revealed the price of the Xbox Series S, but there is no word of an official release date.
Other outlets are reporting leaks that claim that both of Microsoft’s next-generation consoles will be released in November, but this is yet to be confirmed.

When Will the Xbox Series X and Series S consoles be released?
This leak has also revealed that the consoles will both be launching as early as November 10, 2020.
Initially, the Xbox Series S console was leaked by tech news website Thurrot.com and it gave us the first look at Microsoft’s rumoured second console, which will just be a cheaper and less powerful version of the Xbox Series X.
You can check out the video reveal below, which has not officially been unveiled by Microsoft, let alone announced by the company.
As you can see from the video, the Series S is much smaller than the X and it will not come with a disc drive. Windows Central reports that this cheaper console will also have fewer teraflops than the Series X which means it won’t be as powerful.
Xbox has since officially announced the Series S console on Twitter, but there is no mention of a release date to match up with the leaked information.
What is the Xbox Series S?
This console has been hinted at throughout 2020 and referred to as Project Lockheart.
It was rumoured to be announced during the summer and we now know it is going to be a cheaper version of the Xbox Series X.
This means that it will have different specs, but still be able to play next-generation games in stunning fidelity.
We will cover the specs of the console fully in another article, but at a glance, we know that it will be roughly 60 per cent smaller than the Series X and come with a different, custom SSD which will have 512 GB of storage.
Of course, the biggest difference between the Series S and the Series X is that the S has no disc tray. This means that it will allow digitally downloaded games from the Xbox Store only.
How much will the Xbox Series X and Series S consoles cost?
Confirmed by Xbox, this entry-level Series S will cost $299 (£249.99) and there will be an option to pay it off on a price plan of $25 (£19) per month.
The Xbox Series X will reportedly cost $499 (£379.84) and also have an option to pay it off in monthly instalments of $35 (£26), but this isn’t officially confirmed by Microsoft.
According to the leaked information, the Xbox Series X and Series S consoles will be launching together in November.
In response to the leak, Xbox has now officially announced the Xbox Series S on Twitter.
The prices for next-generation consoles have been debated throughout 2020 as people thought the price of the consoles were going to be astronomically high due to the powerful components going into the consoles.
Price points for the Xbox Series X and Series S, if these credible leaks are to be believed, are coming in at about the same price as the Xbox One S and One X console prices when these consoles were launched.
Despite Microsoft not being able to reveal this information itself, it will be interesting to see what Sony will do and if it will come forward to announce the price of the PS5.
