Cole Palmer finally fulfilled a promise which he made during his time at Manchester City in Chelsea’s 4-1 win over Burnley. The 21-year-old midfielder played a crucial role in the Blues’ five-goal thriller at Turf Moor on Saturday afternoon, picking up a goal and an assist.

With Christopher Nkunku still nursing an injury which he suffered in pre-season, Palmer has recently proven to be an excellent addition to Mauricio Pochettino’s starting lineup. Late last month, the England Under-21 international marked his first Chelsea start with an assist against Brighton in the Carabao Cup third round.

Then, a couple of days later versus Fulham in the Premier League, Palmer teed up Armando Broja at Craven Cottage. However, despite the playmaker’s incredible efforts to provide for his teammates in the final-third, he struggled to find the net himself.

But finally, 638 days after promising Pep Guardiola that he’ll score in the English top-flight, Palmer stayed true to his word with a maiden Premier League goal against Burnley. On January 7 2022, the Chelsea ace produced an excellent display for City against Swindon Town in the FA Cup fourth round.

After a superb assist for Bernardo Silva, who opened the scoring, and a great strike which found the top corner, Palmer spoke to ITV about scoring his maiden goal in the competition – and a clip of what followed quickly went viral on social media. He said: “I’m delighted. Prem soon come.”

Palmer won the hearts of thousands across the country with his hilarious comment but, the longer he went without scoring in the Premier League, it quickly become a running joke on social media. After nearly two-years, the former City ace finally put the remark to bed in emphatic fashion, scoring against Burnley.

After the game, Palmer marked his first goal in the English top-flight with a celebratory Instagram post – and he didn’t forget his roots with a brilliant caption. He wrote: “+3 What a feeling to score my first goal!! Fans unreal again [blue heart emoji] Prem Soon… [crying with laughter emoji.”

Rico Lewis was quick to poke fun at his former City teammate in the comment section. Levi Colwill, Thiago Silva, Carney Cukwuemeka, Conor Gallagher, Raheem Sterling and Ian Maatsen all flooded the replies with messages of support too.

Following the Blues’ win over Burnley, Pochettino heaped tremendous praise on Palmer and his counterparts. The Chelsea boss said: “Yes, of course. I was telling you when we lost some games against Nottingham Forest and West Ham that we are building something. We are a young group.

“We are a young team, it doesn’t mean we have signed young players or experienced players, we’re together and what happened in the summer, it’s about a matter of time. We were performing very well but of course players and individuals improve to add to the team, a bit of quality. That is only with time to know each other and to start to perform.

“We start to recover players now because we suffered too many injuries, also it’s going to help the team increase the level and the competition will be tough. Then it will be tough for me to select an XI but it is a thing I love to do and I hope it happens soon.”
