Christopher Nkunku and Romeo Lavia are yet to play for Chelsea this season because of injury, but it looks like there is a possibility of that changing at the weekend.

That is because, according to Phillips, both players will be “available” for selection when the Blues take on Eddie Howe’s side. The journalist shared the update on his Substack Si Phillips Talks Chelsea.

However, he has also stated that there is no guarantee that either Nkunku or Lavia will play, with Mauricio Pochettino and the club’s medical staff still needing to decide whether the Newcastle game is the right time to bring them into the equation.

Before the international break, Nkunku told Pochettino that he wanted to be ready for the trip to St James’ Park.

Should Mauricio Pochettino risk Christopher Nkunku and Romeo Lavia against Newcastle?

No, especially not Nkunku. St James’ Park is a difficult place to play at and Newcastle can be a really physical and defensive team at times.

A match against the Magpies, away from home, is not the sort of game you want to throw your star forward into after he has just returned from a serious injury.

If Chelsea do that, they are asking for trouble, especially after all of the injury problems they have had this season.

Chelsea’s forwards have also been on fire recently, with Nicolas Jackson, Raheem Sterling and Cole Palmer all scoring in the 4-4 draw with Manchester City. When you consider that, there is no need to risk Nkunku.

Pochettino also has quite a strong midfield right now, consisting of Moises Caicedo, Enzo Fernandez and Conor Gallagher. It means the Argentine can ease Lavia back in as well.
