Multichoice, owners of DStv, had broadcasted every edition of the continental showpiece since 1992.

“SuperSport Channel will not broadcast the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023 scheduled for January 13th to February 11th, 2024, because the channel has not secured the rights to broadcast the tournament,” it said in a statement this week.

The new order in African football television following the Togolese broadcaster New World TV's acquisition of the Free-to-Air and Pay TV rights to all CAF competitions in the Sub-Saharan Africa region is not unrelated to the DStv blackout.

SuperSport International, Canal Plus, and the African Union of Broadcasters had previously owned the rights.

According to Daily Trust, New World TV and CAF signed a three-year agreement to become the rights holders of 13 competitions, including the AFCON championships in 2023 and 2025, which would take place in 46 countries in the region, including South Africa.

In order to broadcast the AFCON and any other CAF competitions, the Nigeria Television Authority (NTA) and free-to-air stations in the 46 countries will now need to sublicense the rights through New World TV.
