Chelsea great, Petr Cech has admitted he was actively involved in the appointment of Frank Lampard as Chelsea coach back in July 2019.
Lampard was recruited as the Chelsea head coach after the surprise exit of Maurizo Sarri. But the former Chelsea midfielder didn’t last on the job, as he was sacked after just one and a half season, following a decline in form.
Cech, while speaking on Monday Night Football on Sky Sports, however revealed that he actually wanted the 45-year-old to last longer than he did on the Chelsea managerial hot seat, but unfortunately, he couldn’t have his way.
Cech said: “We had coaches that we had hoped to have for a long time. When Frank Lampard came back, we hoped that that was the moment when we would have had a manager for a long time…”
Cech continued: “When we were deciding who would be the manager after (Maurizio) Sarri’s departure, I was the one who pushed so hard for Frank to become manager. He had done well at Derby County. He was my favourite choice… I was hoping he would go to best possible way.
“We would have liked to have had Frank longer, but you have the board and the big boss (Roman Abramovich): when he wants to make a decision you have to expect it.”
