Billy Gilmour tests positive for Covid-19, miss Euro 2020 Croatia vs Scotland clash

Chelsea midfielder Billy Gilmour has been tested positive for Covid-19 and will miss Scotland’s crucial Euro 2020 group clash with Croatia on Tuesday night.

The Blues star put in a sensational man of the match display on his first start for his country as Scotland held England to a 0-0 draw at Wembley on Friday night.

Gilmour was expected to start once again in midfield for the game against Croatia at Hampden Park. The Scots must beat Croatia tomorrow to stand any chance of qualifying from Group D.

In a statement from the Scottish FA, they said: “The Scottish FA can confirm that a member of the Scotland National Team playing squad, Billy Gilmour, has tested positive for COVID-19.

“Having liaised with Public Health England since the positive test was recorded, Billy will now self-isolate for 10 days and therefore miss tomorrow’s UEFA EURO 2020 Group D match against Croatia at Hampden.”

Gilmour’s virtuoso display against England led to former Arsenal midfielder Patrick Vieira heaping praise on Chelsea’s talented midfielder.

“I think he had a terrific game,” Vieira told ITV Sport.

‘I really love his technical ability. He loves to get on the ball. He’s not quite physical or really strong. But his personality allowed him to get on the ball and make the game from the back.

“His team-mates aren’t scared to give him the ball because they know how good he is on the ball.

“I think he has a really good future ahead of him.”
